Pictures, etc.!

Guess what?  I can finally put some pictures on this blog!  I looked back and realized I haven't really posted any pictures to speak of since July 19, so I might find a lot... be warned!  =)
Well, on second thought, after looking through all the pictures since July, I have decided to do a few different posts, so as not to conglomerate them all into one post!  Here are July's pictures (from the 20th and 27th) (Oh, I'm sure you were just dying to know that!  Ha!)

Greetings from the long absent peoples!

Good day, readers of this blog!
I was going to post and put some pictures on that I've taken, but then I realized that I don't have them on my computer; I downloaded them to the family computer when we were home for Thanksgiving break, but didn't put them on mine because my computer doesn't like to store very many pictures... At any rate, a long explanation to say that I don't have any interesting pictures!  Except for these first three that were taken way back in September.

Yup... this is the only kind of pictures I have on my computer currently.  Try to guess which herbicide is causing these soybeans to die!

And this is a picture from last summer.  It's evidently been on this blog before but I liked it.  Thus, it gets repeated!

Well, that was certainly an interesting post, was it not???  I was wanting to post some pictures of one of the football games that we went to, but as I said before, those pictures are not accessible to me at the present moment of time.  Perhaps you shall be treated to more pictures at a later date of time!
Patty and I have been studiously studying the whole semester, but only two more weeks until Christmas break!  We are very excited and greatly looking forward to five whole weeks of no classes! ... And you should be excited, as well, because perhaps this blog will finally get some attention again for a little while!
But, for now, that is all...

Pictures and Words

All right.  As promised, I am back with some pictures.  I didn't get ones like I wanted yet, but here is what I did get.

And then my camera decided to run out of battery after taking some really blurry pictures.  Oops.  Good thing we have a battery charger!
Oh yeah, I was supposed to put some "words" in along with the pictures.  Well, Patty and I have been at college since the 18th, so that kind of explains the silence on this blog.  We've been occupied studying and whatnot.  And on Saturdays we've been helping park cars for football games(which, by the way, K-State has won both of!  The first one 51-9 vs. Missouri State, and yesterday we creamed Miami 52-13!). 
The most exciting thing to study for is Weed Science.  Coming up with stories to remember the scientific names of weeds is great fun.  Like wild buckwheat is Polygonum convolvulus(I can't even remember what exactly our story was for that), field bindweed is Convolvulous arvenvis(it sends you into convulsions because it's so awful)... and I could go on with 30 more weeds that we've learned so far, but I'll spare you.
I don't quite know what to say and what not to say on this here blog.  How about you comment and tell us what you would like to hear about?

Dear readers, (hehe)
I am most incredibly sorry for the lengthy absence that both of the administrators of this blog have taken from their duties. 

I like this picture(oops, I probably shouldn't say that since I took it...), so I'm posting it.  Ooooo... it makes me miss my dear lil' corn fields!  *sob*  And it reminds me, I haven't taken any pictures since we've been up at K-State!  I miss taking pictures.  This is inspiring me to go out and take some pictures.  Then I would actually have something to post instead of trying to come up with words to say!  I think I shall!
Okay.  That does it.  I am going to go take some pictures, and hopefully remember to come back and post them along with some info as to what we have been doing in the month (!) since we've posted!

Stories from Days Gone By

All righty, well, a few months ago I was skimming through all of my old journals trying to find some interesting stories or anything to post about here on our blogs. And I surprisingly did find a few things that are worthy of posting. So, here are a few stories from a few years ago...(and I'm just gonna type 'em straight from my journal, how they were written then).

"February 25, 2009-- After supper we were talking about Camp Salvation, and Dandi told us some funny camp stories! One especially funny one was once when she was at camp, they had just finished eating supper or something and some of the campers were going back to their cabins, but Dandi and some of her friends were near the cafeteria, and well these boys were going back to their cabin, and all of a sudden they started screaming and yelling (boys screaming! =O My goodness, that's unusual! And Dandi said they sounded like girls! Haha!), and they were yelling, "Bear! There's a bear!" or something. And then one of the guys had a gun and he came out with the gun pointing forward and said, "Where's the bear?"  hahaha! It was just really funny when she told it! It doesn't sound as funny on paper, but it really is humorous! She told more camp stories too, but I'm not going to write them down."

July 18, 2009-- Pa just told us a funny story about when he was younger! I really like hearing stories! I wish Pa and Ma told them more often though! But anyway, when Pa was about 6 or 7 years old, he got bit by a dog. Well, first of all, they (Pa and his family) were getting ready to go to Liberal (they lived in Meade, KS), and the dogs were eating or something, and Pa had one of those things that you blow on and this thing pops out. And he went up to one of the dogs and blew it right in the dog's ear, and the dog immediately bit Pa on the ear! And so they were late getting to Liberal. But the funny part was that Pa blew the thing in the dog's ear! Haha! That is very amusing! See, Pa did things like that when he was younger to, just like we do! So that is where we got it obviously!"

July 18, 2009-- I practiced for a few minutes on the 13th, and while practicing, I fell off of my chair! Backwards! How it happened is, I got a bit frustrated, because my violin wasn't playing how I wanted it to, and leaned back in my chair (forgetting that I was sitting in a chair with no back on it!) and all of a sudden, I started falling backwards, and fell completely out of the chair...with my violin still in my hand. But thankfully I was able to shelter my violin, and it didn't hit the floor. It was fine. I was fine too, it was actually kinda fun! Funny too! Falling backwards out of your chair is quite exciting actually! You might try it sometime...though I wouldn't advise doing it when you have your instrument."

And someday I will post some more interesting things...about "Best Excuses for Getting Caught Sleeping in Class" and other random things like that. But that's it for now! I've got books that need to be read!

Some random Cattle things!

Well, ya know how this is called, "Chewin' the Cud"...well, dontcha think I oughta talk about cattle more often than? Yeah, that's what I thought. So, here are some random things that have to do with cattle. Just for the fun of it! =)
 First of all, a couple of cow jokes. Please don't laugh!

 Me: Knock, Knock.
 You: Who's there?
 Me: Cow.
 You: Cow, who?
 Me: Cows don't say "who", cows say "moo"!

Q: What do you call a grumpy cow?
A: Moo-dy.

Q: What do you call cattle with a sense of humor?
A: A laughing stock!

Below is a random selection of interesting or unusual facts about Cattle

Cattle are extremely curious creatures and investigate anything and everything.

Cattle have one stomach but it is divided into four compartments, the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum, the rumen being the largest compartment, this arrangement helps cattle to more efficiently digest grains and grasses.

Cattle are ruminants, this means that they have a digestive system that allows them to digest foods, which would otherwise be indigestible, by the process of repeated regurgitating and rechewing of food referred to as "cud". The cud is then reswallowed and further digested by specialised microrganisms in the rumen. The rumen holds up to an incredible 50 gallons of partially digested food. 

Cattle chew their cud for up to 8 hours each day and they spend approximately six hours eating.
 
 Cows eat about 40 pounds of food each day and drink 30 gallons of water, approximately a bathtub full.

Cattle drink water by the use of a sucking action, they do not lap up water like a cat or dog.
 
Cattle have an almost total 360-degree panoramic vision.
 
 Cattle have an incredible sense of smell, they can detect odors up to five miles away and can they can hear low and high frequency sounds better than humans.   

Cows are good mothers and have been known to walk for miles to find their calves.

Cattle have appeared on postage stamps. The example below is the United States one dollar stamp of 1898 trans-Mississippi issue. Known as the "Black Bull", this is often considered the finest design ever seen on a US stamp.  
(they should make more cattle stamps!!!!)

Intern Stories

Intern stories?!?  Oh goody, what fun!!  HA, just kidding; not the type of intern stories you're thinking... sorry!
I just noticed that this blog hasn't been posted on since the 5th of the month, so I decided I better get to it!!
I'll just intersperse a few pictures in with my "stories".  Heh heh.

 Well, now that I've sat down and started writing, there really aren't any exciting stories to tell!  So I'll just ramble. 

 Last Friday as I was checking some dryland milo fields, I looked up and noticed a rainbow in the west!  I was greatly disappointed to remember that I had NOT remembered to bring the camera with me that day!  Oh great disappointment.  It would have made for a splendid picture with milo in the foreground and the wind towers and rainbow in the background!   Ah well...  I shall just have to get over it, I suppose.

 Later on in the day(Oh, no, wait, this was on Wednesday) I was trudging through a corn field, studiously inspecting leaves for egg masses, when all of a sudden my foot plunged into a sprinkler track that had appeared out of nowhere, and I twisted my ankle miserably.  I walked it off and it stopped hurting after awhile, but on Friday I couldn't shift the four wheeler with that foot for the greater part of the day because it had started hurting again, so I had to reach down and shift with my hand.  I discovered that I can still drive straight and do that at the same time!  Whoopee.  Then on Friday I was being careful at sprinkler tracks, both because of that and because they were muddy and some filled with water.  Well I approached one and carefully stepped over to the other side, but the mud was so slippery that it pulled me back and the bottom half of my leg proceeded to get soaked.  Ah well, then it doesn't feel so hot when you're wet!

 Speaking of wet... later in the day on Friday I was up near the Pawnee river checking some milo fields, and one of the fields is across the river from the other, so usually you just find a place that isn't too steep and drive the four wheeler across.  Aha!  Well, today there was water knee deep all the way across the river!!!  Amazin', eh?  Well, so then I had to wade across.  It would have been lovely, except for that the water was warm from the sun so it didn't cool me down any, and it had been sitting stagnant for several days so it stank.  And it was murky so I couldn't see through it.  I grimaced every time I stepped on something that didn't quite feel like it should be there.  Who knows what all was in the bottom of that river??  I'm just glad I didn't come across any water snakes!  Yikes!

 Then there's this other field that I check on Fridays that makes shudders run up and down me.  (Well, maybe not quite shudders)  It's one of the dairy's fields, and they used to dump all their dead animals in their manure pile... so thus, when they spread manure on the field, the bones go along with it.  The south side of this field is a literal graveyard!  There are bones EVERYWHERE!  It's really quite disgusting.  I check it around noon, and the last time I checked it I made sure to eat my sandwich before checking it. 

 Hey, a spray plane!  Cool, you can see the chemical coming out! =D  Oh, that reminds me of another little story!  I was sitting in my pickup one broiling afternoon writing up my notes from the field I had just checked when this farmer comes by and informs me that the field had just been sprayed that morning.  Oh, how nice!  And I had already checked it!  Well, it must not have had too deadly of effects on me... I'm still alive anyway! =P
Then last Wednesday I was just getting ready to leave the pickup to check a field when Pa called and told me to watch for dead beetles when I was going into the next two fields, and if I saw any not to go in any farther.  They had starting chemigating Penncap(which has a 30 day "stay out"(I don't know what it's called for real) label, but we go in after 7 days)... without telling Pa even though they had just talked to him the day before! 

 This picture is rather creepy... the upper leaves almost look like all kinds of arms reaching out to GRAB you!  Which reminds me of something else!  Sometimes when you're walking through a corn field, a couple leaves will tangle together in front of you and you have to break through them; which usually is no trouble.  But a couple days ago a whole bunch of leaves decided to gang up on me and they all joined together and formed a thick rope that I could not get through without tugging and pushing and exasperating myself until FINALLY they broke!  (It didn't occur to me that I could just as easily have backed up and gone around.  But no, it's better to go through obstacles than around them, eh?  Toughens ya up.)

 You can barely tell what this picture is of... it's soybeans with a very bright sun shining through!

 And lastly, below are three videos I took yesterday.

 Now I'm in the field... valiantly fighting through the rows!  Hahaha
